RESUMEN

An increase in systemic blood pressure causes bleeding and ischemia owing to peripheral vascular breakdown, leading to various forms of organ damage. The brain, eyes, kidneys, and cardiovascular system are known target organs for hypertension. To our knowledge, no reports in Japan describe, in detail, the types of antihypertensive drugs used to treat hypertension in cats or its underlying causes. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the use of antihypertensive drugs in domestic cats with hypertension in Japan, the causes of hypertension, and the vital prognosis of these patients. In the present survey, we found that amlodipine was used alone (60/80 cats) or concomitantly (20/80 cats) in all cat patients with hypertension in Japan. We also determined that blood pressure measurements were not yet routinely performed on cats at veterinary clinics in Japan. Furthermore, we have new information suggesting that amlodipine administration in cats with hypertension, which lowers systolic arterial pressure levels to within the normal range (<140 mmHg), may have a negative impact on their survival. Routine blood pressure measurements for cats during their regular health checkups can help identify hypertension, and proper interpretation of blood pressure readings can facilitate suitable treatment measures.

RESUMEN

We have demonstrated the utility of SYNAPSE VINCENT® (version 6.6; Fujifilm Medical Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan), a 3D image analysis system, in semi-automated simulations of the peripancreatic vessels, pancreatic ducts, pancreatic parenchyma, and peripancreatic organs using an artificial intelligence (AI) engine developed with deep learning algorithms. Furthermore, we investigated the usefulness of this AI engine for patients with pancreatic cancer. Here, we present a case of laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy with an extended surgical procedure performed using surgical simulation and navigation via an AI engine. An 80-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain. Enhanced abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed main pancreatic duct dilatation with a maximum diameter of 40 mm. Furthermore, there was a 17 mm cystic lesion between the pancreatic head and the pancreatic body and a 14 mm mural nodule in the pancreatic tail. Thus, the lesion was preoperatively diagnosed as an intraductal papillary carcinoma (IPMC) of the pancreatic tail and classified as T1N0M0 stage IA according to the 8th edition of the Union for International Cancer Control guidelines. The present patient had laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy and regional lymphadenectomy. In particular, since it was necessary to include the cystic lesion in the pancreatic neck, pancreatic resection was performed at the right edge of the portal vein, which is closer to the head of the pancreas than usual. We routinely employed three-dimensional computer graphics (3DCG) surgical simulation and navigation, which allowed us to recognize the surgical anatomy, including the location of pancreatic resection. In addition to displaying the detailed 3DCG of the surgical anatomy, this technology allowed surgical staff to share the situation, and it has been reported that this approach improves the safety of surgery. Furthermore, the remnant pancreatic volume (47.6%), pancreatic resection surface area (161 mm2), and thickness of the pancreatic parenchyma (12 mm) at the resection location were investigated using 3DCG imaging. Intraoperative frozen biopsy confirmed that the resection margin was negative. Histologically, an intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm with low-grade dysplasia was observed in the pancreatic tail. No malignant findings, including those related to the resection margin, were observed in the specimen. At the 12-month postoperative follow-up examination, the patient's condition was unremarkable. We conclude that the SYNAPSE VINCENT® AI engine is a useful surgical support for the extraction of the surrounding vessels, surrounding organs, and pancreatic parenchyma including the location of the pancreatic resection even in the case of extended surgical procedures.

RESUMEN

Osteosarcoma treatment with limb-sparing surgery using liquid nitrogen can be applied to canine patients experiencing diminished quality of life after leg amputation. In particular, forelimb amputation may affect gait more than hindlimb amputation. In this study, limb-sparing surgery using liquid nitrogen was applied to primary osteosarcomas arising in the proximal scapula of a Welsh Corgi, the proximal humerus of a Golden Retriever, and the distal radius of a Great Pyrenees, according to the protocol of Tsuchiya et al. In all cases, postoperative radiographic examination revealed bone union between the treated and matrix bones. All patients recovered their gait postoperatively. These results suggest that limb-sparing surgery using liquid nitrogen-treated autologous bone is an effective option for patients with osteosarcoma.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between oxygen reserve index (ORI) and arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) in anesthetized dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective experimental study. ANIMALS: A total of eight healthy adult Beagle dogs with a median age of 38 (range 20-87) months and a median body mass of 8.6 (range 7.0-13.8) kg. METHODS: After induction of general anesthesia with propofol, dogs were mechanically ventilated and anesthesia maintained with isoflurane carried in oxygen. Arterial blood samples were collected from a catheter placed in the femoral artery. ORI was measured by placing a CO-oximeter sensor on the tongue. Inspired oxygen fraction (FiO2) was increased from 21% to > 95% in increments of 5%. PaO2 and ORI were recorded and compared at different times. The relationship between ORI and PaO2 was investigated using a nonlinear function, the Hill equation, and a linear regression analysis was performed, as appropriate. RESULTS: A total of 128 pairs of values were compared for all dogs. Applying the Hill equation to the relationship between ORI and PaO2 resulted in R2 = 0.80 (p < 0.001) with a Hill coefficient of 3.7. It was predicted that ORI ranged 0.1-0.9 as PaO2 ranged 127.0-417.9 mmHg and that in the more linear portion of the range, PaO2 of 127.0-289.9 mmHg ORI ranged 0.1-0.7. Linear regression analysis in the more linear portion showed a weak correlation (R2 = 0.29, p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In the present study, the Hill equation predicted the relationship between PaO2 and ORI for PaO2 ranging 127.0-417.9 mmHg in anesthetized dogs. However, in the linear portion of the PaO2, the coefficient of determination was low, indicating that ORI is not a surrogate for PaO2.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: A case of 67-year-old male patient with superficial papular neuroma (SPN) on the occiput is reported. This is the second report of SPN and the first with clinical images. Histologically, in the superficial dermis and periadnexa, the specimen exhibits a nodule of bland spindle cells with an S-shaped and spindle nucleus, surrounded by eosinophilic collagen fibers and scattered mast cells, which forms focally peripheral nerve-like structures. Lichen simplex chronicus-like changes are observed. Immunostaining result revealed that the tumor cells are positive for S-100, neurofilament, collagen IV, and CD34 but negative for Melan A, epithelial membrane antigen, and glial fibrillary acidic protein. Histological differential diagnosis includes prurigo nodularis, neurotized nevus, benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor, such as neurofibroma or schwannoma, a type of neuroma, such as traumatic neuroma, mucosal neuroma, and palisaded encapsulated neuroma, or a type of neural hamartoma. A careful histological investigation will enable dermatopathologists to make a diagnosis of SPN.

RESUMEN

Background: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a refractory ocular allergic disorder that mainly affects boys. A few studies have attempted to develop a classification of subtypes of VKC. In this study, we investigated a computational approach called cluster analysis to separate VKC cases into groups based on clinically relevant characteristics. Methods: In total, 41 consecutive patients clinically diagnosed with VKC at the Department of Ophthalmology of Fukuoka University Hospital were included. Patients were treated with immunosuppressive eye drops without simultaneous corticosteroid eye drops, except for the occurrence of exacerbations. Collated variables were age at onset, clinical score of ocular lesions at baseline, clinical score of ocular lesions at final visit, clinical score of atopic dermatitis (AD) at baseline, frequency of exacerbations of VKC, serum total IgE level and peripheral blood eosinophil count. Results: VKC patients were grouped into three clusters by cluster analysis, and cluster 1, 2, and 3 comprised 25, 9 and 7 cases, respectively. There were differences in the incidence of complications of AD and age at onset among the clusters; therefore, we named the three clusters for better understanding as traditional VKC (cluster 1), early-onset atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC)/VKC (cluster 2) and puberty-onset AKC (cluster 3). Conclusion: We found in this study that VKC in childhood has three phenotypes which were previously unknown. Our findings may help to establish precision medicine by focusing on the phenotype of each case to develop individualized medicine to prevent exacerbations.

RESUMEN

Objective: Recently, number of laparoscopic subtotal cholecystectomy (LSC) has been increasing. Summary background data: LSC is suitable as a treatment as it can avoid intraoperative bile duct injury and bleeding for difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy. On the other hand, improper handling of remnant of GB can lead to postoperative bile leakage. Methods: Here, we report our positive experience utilizing new technique of continuous suture closure and omental covering using Lapra Ty® suture clips on the remnant of GB. Results: From January 2016 to July 2021, we experienced 30 cases of LSC for LC patients who had difficulty securing critical view of safety (CVS). In six of the 30 cases, we repaired remnant of GB using continuous suture closure and omental covering with Lapra Ty® suture clips. The median operating time was 136 min (range 112-199 ml), and amount of bleeding was 1 ml (range 1-100). There were no cases of postoperative bile leakage (postope. BL), remnant cystic duct stone, and abscess formation in abdomen. Conclusion: we recommend this new suturing technique for closure of remnant of GB as it was very effective in preventing postope. BL after LSC.

RESUMEN

Background: In recent years, left ventricular hypertrophy and cardiac dysfunction have been reported in human and canine patients with hypercortisolism and in dogs treated experimentally with high-dose prednisolone. However, to our knowledge, there have been no reports on the effects of hyperglucocorticism (HGC) on the mitral valve (MV). Aim: This study aimed to compare the MV in dogs treated with high-dose prednisolone with that in healthy dogs to investigate the effects of HGC on the MV. Methods: We investigated the effects of HGC on the MV by comparing samples obtained from high-dose glucocorticoid (GC)-treated (P) and healthy (C) dogs. The P group included healthy Beagle dogs (n = 6) treated with prednisolone (2 mg/kg, bid, po) for 84 days and the C group included healthy Beagle dogs (n = 6) euthanized for unrelated reasons. The anterior and posterior mitral leaflets (AML and PML, respectively) from both groups were harvested and stained with hematoxylin-eosin, Alcian blue, and Masson trichome. Additionally, adiponectin (ADN) and GC receptor immunohistochemistry were performed. Histological evaluation was performed in the atrialis, spongiosa, fibrosa, and all layers of the proximal, middle, and distal regions of the AML and PML. Results: The proportion of the spongiosa layer thickness to the total thickness was higher in the P than in the C group (proximal and middle AML). However, the proportion of the fibrosa layer thickness to the total thickness was lower in the P than in the C group (middle PML). Areas of acidic sulfated mucosubstance deposition were smaller in the fibrosa layer and all layers (middle AML), while those of collagen deposition were smaller in the spongiosa and total layers (proximal and middle AML), in the P than in the C group. Additionally, ADN expression in the spongiosa layer was higher in the P than in the C group (middle AML). Conclusion: These findings suggest that long-term administration of synthetic GCs induces histological changes in the MV. These changes may lead to MV dysfunction in dogs with HGC.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To ensure that highly advanced hepatobiliary-pancreatic surgery (HBPS) is performed safely, the Japanese Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery (JSHBPS) board certification system for expert surgeons established a safety committee to monitor surgical safety. METHODS: We investigated postoperative mortality rates based on summary reports of numbers and outcomes of highly advanced HBPS submitted annually by the board-certified training institutions from 2012 to 2019. We also analyzed summary reports on mortality cases submitted by institutions with high 90-day post-HBPS mortality rates and recommended site visits and surveys as necessary. RESULTS: Highly advanced HBPS was performed in 121 518 patients during the 8-year period. Thirty-day mortality rates from 2012 to 2019 were 0.92%, 0.8%, 0.61%, 0.63%, 0.70%, 0.59%, 0.48%, and 0.52%, respectively (P < .001). Ninety-day mortality rates were 2.1%, 1.82%, 1.62%, 1.28%, 1.46%, 1.22%, 1.19%, and 0.98%, respectively (P < .001). Summary reports were submitted by 20 hospitals between 2015 and 2019. Mortality rates before and after the start of report submission and audit were 5.72% and 2.79%, respectively (odds ratio 0.690, 95% confidence interval 0.487-0.977; P = .037). CONCLUSIONS: Development of a system for designation of board-certified expert surgeons and safety management improved the mortality rate associated with highly advanced HBPS.

RESUMEN

Background: We previously reported that myocardial fibrosis may be one of the causes of left ventricular hypertrophy and cardiac dysfunction in dogs with hyperglucocorticism (HGC). The detailed mechanism by which myocardial fibrosis of the left ventricle occurs in dogs with HGC remains unclear. Aim: Th is study investigated the mechanism by which HGC causes fibrosis of the left ventricle. Methods: The impa cts of HGC on the heart by comparing samples obtained from high-dose glucocorticoid (GC)-treated (P) and untreated (C) dogs. The P group included healthy Beagle dogs (n = 6) treated with prednisolone (2 mg/kg, bid, po) for 84 days, and the C group included healthy Beagle dogs (n = 6) euthanized for unrelated reasons. In three of the P group dogs, serum was collected before the start of administration (Day 0) and on Day 84 to measure angiotensin II concentrations and oxidative stress markers (8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8OHdG), NADPH oxidase, and superoxide levels). Samples of the left ventricular free wall (LVFW), right ventricular free wall (RVFW), interventricular septum (IVS), and aortic root were harvested from both groups (n = 6 for each group). Using these tissue samples, angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R), 8OHdG, and transforming growth factor ß1 (TGFß1) immunohistochemical stains were performed. Results: The blood N ADPH oxidase concentration was significantly higher (p = 0.027) in the P group 84 days after initiation of the medication compared to that before prednisolone treatment. By contrast, there was no significant difference in serum angiotensin II (p = 0.450), 8OHdG (p = 0.068), and superoxide (p = 0.057) concentrations. The positive staining rates of AT1R, 8OHdG, and TGFß1 in the heart (LVFW, RVFW, IVS, and aortic root) were significantly higher in the P group than those in the C group. Conclusion: Angiotensin II and oxidative stress in HGC may cause left ventricular fibrosis in dogs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Pituitary-dependent hypercortisolism (PDH) is one of the most common endocrine disorders in veterinary medicine. However, there are few reports on pituitary tumor apoplexy (PTA) in dogs and no reports on its surgical intervention in veterinary medicine. Accordingly, the appropriate treatment is unknown. Herein, a case of PDH and PTA in a dog treated surgically is described. CASE PRESENTATION: A mongrel female dog (spayed; age, 8 years and 8 months; weight, 6.1 kg) with persistently elevated alkaline phosphatase underwent adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation testing (post-stimulation cortisol: 20.5 µg/dL), abdominal ultrasonography (adrenal gland thickness: left, 5.7 mm; right, 8.1 mm), and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (pituitary-to-brain ratio [PBR], 0.61) at the referral hospital, resulting in a diagnosis of PDH (day 0). On day 9, the dog visited XXXX for the preparation of pituitary surgery to treat PDH. However, on days 10-15, the dog developed a loss of energy and appetite, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and a decreased level of consciousness. However, on day 16, the dog's condition recovered. A preoperative MRI scan performed on day 52 (the day of surgery) showed apoplexy in the dorsal pituitary region (PBR, 0.68). Based on the PTA findings, the risks of surgery were described to the owner, and approval was obtained. At the time of trans-sphenoidal surgery, a partial pituitary resection was performed with preservation of the PTA area due to adhesions between the PTA area of the right side of the pituitary and surrounding tissues. The resected pituitary tissue was diagnosed as an ACTH-producing adenoma, with necrotic and hemorrhagic findings. As of day 290, endogenous ACTH and cortisol levels did not exceed the reference range. CONCLUSIONS: The acute signs that occurred on days 10-15 were most likely caused by PTA. Therefore, when signs similar to those detected in acute hypoadrenocorticism are observed in dogs with PDH, it is necessary to include PTA as a differential diagnosis. Trans-sphenoidal surgery may be effective in PDH-affected dogs that develop PTA, but careful attention should be paid to tissue adhesions secondary to hemorrhage that may occur after PTA.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively review the efficacy of combined surgery comprising dorsal laminectomy and dorsal fixation using screws and polymethylmethacrylate as treatment for dogs with degenerative lumbosacral stenosis (DLSS). ANIMALS: 21 client owned dogs diagnosed with DLSS and treated surgically. PROCEDURES: Based on clinical records, signalments, clinical signs, findings from orthopedic and neurological examinations, imaging findings, and postoperative complications were evaluated at the following time points: preoperatively, postoperatively, and 3, 6, 12, 24, and 36 months after surgery. RESULTS: In all 21 cases, clinical signs were alleviated, proprioceptive deficits were improved from 3 months after surgery, and no recurrence of clinical signs was observed during the observation period. Minor complications were observed in 6 cases (28.6%), including implant failure in 2 (9.5%), delayed healing of surgical wounds in 2 (9.5%), seroma in 1 (4.8%), and swelling of the affected area in 1 (4.8%). There was no case with major complications. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Combined surgery comprising dorsal laminectomy and dorsal fixation using screws and polymethylmethacrylate is a useful treatment that can improve long-term clinical signs in dogs with DLSS.

RESUMEN

The middle mesenteric artery, also known as the third mesenteric artery, is a very rare anomaly. Several anatomical variations of middle mesenteric artery have been reported; in these reports, the right colic artery and/or middle colic artery often originate directly from the aorta. Here, we report a middle mesenteric artery in which the middle colic artery originated directly from the abdominal aorta. We also provide three-dimensional computed tomography and angiography findings and discuss anatomical and embryological considerations.

RESUMEN

Transsphenoidal surgery (TSS) is a curative treatment for pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism, and its use in dogs has recently increased. One of the most serious postoperative complications of TSS is dyspnoea. We report three cases where transtracheal catheter oxygen therapy prevented death from respiratory distress secondary to enlarged soft palate after TSS.

RESUMEN

We evaluated the completeness of bony fusion of the atlantoaxial joint (AAJ) through polymethylmethacrylate fixation (PMF) and atlantoaxial plate fixation (APF) using six canine models with dens partial resection. In both groups, the hydroxyapatite content at the AAJ was measured up to 7 months postoperatively using quantitative computed tomography. Histological assessment revealed fibrous fusion in the PMF group. Meanwhile, in the APF group, only one dog achieved fibrous fusion, whereas the remaining three showed bony fusion. To our knowledge, this study was the first to evaluate AAJ fusion histologically after PMF and APF. The present study demonstrates that PMF and APF may stabilize the AAJ without clinical complications. Therefore, PMF and APF are clinically useful fixation methods for atlantoaxial instability.

RESUMEN

TG18 recommends bailout surgery (BOS) for difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy. However, there is not a clear criterion on the decision process on whether to continue laparoscopic BOS or open BOS, and optimal procedure for treatment for the remnant cystic bile duct also awaits discussion. We comparted with open BOS and laparoscopic BOS, and compared with suture close and clipping or ligating of remnant cystic duct. We have accrued 57 patients underwent BOS during study period. Seventeen cases underwent laparoscopic BOS, and 38 cases underwent open BOS. There were 22 patients were accrued in suture closing and 35 patients were accrued in clipping or ligating. Open BOS experienced high levels of CRP, WBC, NLR, and CAR, and was associated with significantly longer hospitalization, operating time, and amount of bleeding. Suture close was higher in patients with preoperative endoscopic lithotripsy (EL). BOS can be sufficiently performed under laparoscopy. Patients underwent preoperative EL tended to be higher necessity to suture close of cystic duct.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to clarify the histological effects of tibial plateau levelling osteotomy on cranial cruciate ligament degeneration induced by excessive tibial plateau angle. STUDY DESIGN: Five female Beagles were used to bilaterally create excessive tibial plateau angle models surgically. A second tibial plateau levelling osteotomy was performed 11 months after the first surgery on the right stifle (tibial plateau levelling osteotomy group), and a sham operation that did not change the tibial plateau angle was performed on the left stifle (excessive tibial plateau angle group). At 6 months after the second surgery, the dogs were euthanatized. The cranial cruciate ligament was stained with haematoxylin-eosin to assess the cell density, Alcian-Blue to assess proteoglycans and Elastica-Eosin to assess elastic fibres, and immunohistochemically stained to assess type I (COL1) and type II collagen and SRY-type HMG box 9 (SOX9) expression. RESULTS: In each group, the cranial cruciate ligament degeneration, especially on the tibial side, including the presence of Alcian-Blue- and Elastica-Eosin-positive regions, decreased in COL1-positive regions, and enhancement of SOX9 expression was observed. Besides, compared with the tibial plateau levelling osteotomy group, the excessive tibial plateau angle group showed increases in Alcian-Blue- and Elastica-Eosin-positive regions and a decrease in the COL1-positive regions. CONCLUSION: The results suggested that excessive tibial plateau angle-induced cranial cruciate ligament degeneration can be suppressed by reducing the biomechanical load on the cranial cruciate ligament by performing tibial plateau levelling osteotomy.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Melanocytic hyperplasia (MH) overlying surgical scars has been reported but MH adjacent to the scar has not been previously addressed. METHODS: We evaluated scar-associated MH in 489 re-excision specimens of basal cell carcinoma. Melanocytic density, confluence, atypia, suprabasal scatter, follicular extension, distance from the scar, correlation with clinicopathologic parameters, and PRAME expression were recorded. RESULTS: One hundred seventy-seven of 489 (36%) cases exhibited MH beyond the scar extending to 6.65 mm median distance, with a median density of 13 melanocytes/0.5 mm (6-24 mm), confluence in 74 (42%) cases, atypia in 14 (8%), suprabasal melanocytes in 25 (14%), and follicular extension in 21 (12%). Mean age of MH group was significantly lower than non-MH group (P < 0.0001). MH overlying the scar was significantly higher in specimens with elastosis than those without elastosis (P < 0.0001). PRAME expression was absent in 14 of 20 cases and present in rare melanocytes in 6 cases. CONCLUSIONS: Increased melanocytic density with confluence, mild atypia, suprabasal scatter, and superficial follicular extension may be observed in re-excision specimens adjacent to surgical scars in the absence of a melanocytic neoplasm. These observations are helpful for appropriate interpretation of melanoma re-excision specimens, to avoid potential pitfalls in diagnosis and unnecessary therapeutic measures.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, a shortage of surgeons and anesthesiologists, particularly in regional hospitals, has become a social issue in Japan. In such hospitals, urgent surgery at night has been performed with difficulty. Therefore, we retrospectively assessed the outcomes of appendectomies for the patients visited at nighttime in our hospital categorized as a local university hospital. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 82 patients of acute appendicitis presented to our hospital between 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m., between January 2014 and April 2019. We compared patients who underwent urgent nighttime appendectomy (group A) and patients who underwent appendectomy during the daytime, or so-called short interval appendectomy (group B). The evaluated factors were preoperative characteristics (age, sex, body mass index, cardiopulmonary complications, laboratory data, body temperature, presence of the Blumberg sign, and CT findings), operation characteristics, and postoperative characteristics (surgical-site infection [SSI], complications, and length of hospital stay). RESULTS: Patients in group A were significantly younger than patients in group B. Patients in group A were significant more likely to experience an SSI. DISCUSSION: Patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis during the nighttime can undergo short interval appendectomy, which leads to a decreased risk of SSI, has no effect on length of hospital stay after surgery, and lessens medical staff burden.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hyperadrenocorticism (HAC) is a common endocrine disorder in dogs; however, there are no reports on the use of the corticotropin-releasing hormone test (CRHT) to differentiate between pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH) and cortisol-producing adrenal tumors (CPATs), both causative of HAC. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the usefulness of CRHT as a tool to differentiate between PDH and CPAT in dogs and to determine the reference intervals for CRHT in healthy, PDH, and CPAT dogs. ANIMALS: Dogs diagnosed with PDH (n = 21), CPAT (n = 6), and healthy beagle dogs (n = 33). METHODS: This prospective study included dogs with a definitive diagnosis of PDH and CPAT and healthy beagle dogs, in which CRHT was performed, were prospectively evaluated. We investigated the correlations of CRHT (endogenous adrenocorticotropic hormone [ACTH] concentration, endogenous ACTH concentration [EAC], and poststimulation ACTH concentration [PAC]) with pituitary-to-brain ratio (PBR) (in PDH) and with indices of adrenal ultrasonography (smaller and larger adrenal gland dorsoventral thickness in PDH and CPAT). RESULTS: For EAC, the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.95, with a cutoff value of 26.3 pg/mL (sensitivity: 90.62%, specificity: 87.50%). The AUC for PAC was 0.96 with a cutoff value of 54.5 pg/mL (sensitivity: 100.00%, specificity: 66.67%). The 95% reference interval for CRHT in healthy (control) dogs ranged 5.00 to 79.8 pg/mL (1.10-17.57 pmol/L) for EAC, and 1.92 to 153.42 pg/mL (0.42-33.78 pmol/L) for PAC. There was no significant correlation between PBR and CRHT, nor adrenal size and CRHT. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: CRHT appears to be a rapid and reliable test for differentiating PDH from CPAT in dogs.
